Veterans Appreciation Week Observed at NOCCCD

By Melissa Lum

The week of November 10 – 14 is now Veterans Appreciation Week.

This year Veterans Day falls on Tuesday, November 11. NOCCCD observes Veterans Day as an official holiday, but the support and resources it offers to its veteran community are available year-round.

The 2020 Census revealed that California has the largest veteran population in the United States, with over 1.8 million former service members and 25,000 veterans leaving active duty and settling here each year. To serve these residents, both Cypress College and Fullerton College have Veteran Resource Centers (VRCs) to advocate for military affiliated students. This encompasses students who are active-duty, reservists, veterans, and the children or spouses of such service members.

At the VRC’s, students can enjoy community social spaces as well as access a range of services tailored to their specific needs. This includes academic counseling, educational planning, and assistance with the admissions and enrollment process. The centers also offer support in navigating the various educational benefits and financial aid programs available to veterans and their dependents, ensuring that they can make the most of the resources available to them.

Military-affiliated students can visit the campus VRC for services such as:

  • Textbook and laptop loaning
  • Academic counseling
  • Tutoring
  • Scholarship opportunities
  • Outside the Wire – A confidential and free mental health program designed for student veterans
