NOCCCD Celebrates Continuous Pride
While June is officially designated to highlight the LGBTQIA+ community, NOCCCD supports these groups year-round. Read on to learn what the District is doing this month and what resources are always available to students.
The month of June wasn’t always associated with LGBTQIA+ rights. The first Pride marches were held in June 1970 across New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago as a reaction to the Stonewall Uprising that happened that same month a year prior. The exceptional turnout and success of these first Pride marches, held on what was once known as Christopher Street Liberation Day, showed the nation the strength of the LGBTQIA+ community’s identity and pride. Soon, cities across the country found their own ways to organize and celebrate each other, with June being designated as national “Pride Month” during the President Obama administration.
NOCCCD started the party early, inviting students from all its campuses to the “Queers, Careers, and Community Pre-Pride Month” event in early May 2025. LGBTQIA+ staff and faculty served as panelists, providing their first-hand experiences navigating their identities in the workplace and throughout their professional journeys. Each of the institutions at the District have also established support for their LGBTQIA+ students.
Cypress College proudly held its second annual drag show in April and most recently held their Lavender Graduation and Queer Prom on June 2. NOCE held “Connection Circles” throughout the Spring semester, giving the community a chance to share stories and experiences with each other in a safe space, in addition to their “Pride, Pastries, and Coffee” gathering at the Anaheim Campus on June 10.
The March Queer Social at Fullerton College welcomed Salvador de la Torre, a Southern Californian artist who has been featured at the Brea Gallery for his embroidery work, a form of art they shared with students during that month’s workshop. The College’s full Pride Month itinerary can be found on the Fullerton College website.
NOCCCD’s values of diversity and inclusion are embedded in our services—in fact, all three schools have designated resource centers that provide specialized services for their students, with mental health workshops, wellness activities, and networking opportunities throughout the academic year.
Follow each school’s LGBTQIA+ online spaces to show your support.
