Announcing the Winners of the NOCCCD Women in Power Spaces Initiative “Resilience Awards”
On Thursday, September 17, 2026, the North Orange County Community College District was proud to bestow the inaugural “Resilience Awards” at the Women in Power Spaces Convening.
The Resilience Awards recognize NOCCCD employees who were nominated by their peers for showing leadership in and commitment to addressing gender equity disparities through bold initiatives, the generous mentoring of women leaders, and rejection of patriarchal discrimination.
In addition to a $250 check provided by SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union and a bottle of Le Bon Argent Rosé Cuvée champagne generously gifted by our sponsors, the four WiPS Resilience Award winners received a custom lapel medal with the fierce visage of the iconic Greek mythology figure of Medusa.
Traditionally considered a figure of fear and revulsion, Medusa has been reimagined in contemporary feminist discourse as a strong emblem of female anger and empowerment. The term “monstrous feminine” was coined by theorist Barbara Creed in her psychoanalytic study The Monstrous-Feminine: Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis in which she asserts that the “monster” is actually a symbol of female power threatening patriarchal principles. Medusa has become a rallying figure, representing the collective anger and resilience of women who refuse to be marginalized and respond with defiant resilience.
The recipients of the 2026 WiPS Resilience Award Winners are:
- Dr. Rosie Kar, Ethnic Studies Assistant Professor, Fullerton College; Project Director, APIDA Amplified
- Kelly Robertson, Professor, Fullerton College; Faculty Coordinator, Administration of Justice
- Gabriela De La Cruz, Financial Aid Director, Cypress College

Awardees' Achievements and Accomplishments
All Resilience Award winners were nominated by their peers. Read on to hear more about the winners' impact through the voice of their nominators.
Dr. Rosie Kar, Fullerton College
“Dr. Kar is a transformational professor and administrator with a steadfast commitment to advancing accessible education, mentorship, and leadership for women. As an eldest daughter of immigrant parents, Dr. Kar is not only a caretaker to her family but also to her students. Students walk out of her classroom with a newfound voice and envision themselves as future leaders. By centering the experiences of women whose stories have too often been excluded from traditional curricula, she helps students recognize their own potential and equips them with the skills to navigate higher education and their careers. Dr. Kar has actively mentored generations of young women to stand tall and confident, even if they are the only woman in the room.”
Kelly Robertson, Fullerton College
“Kelly has been a champion for women pursuing careers in criminal justice, forensic science, and public safety. Through the Administration of Justice Degree Program, the Crime Scene Investigation Certificate Program, and her extensive professional network, she creates meaningful opportunities for women to gain experience, build confidence, and establish connections.
Kelly recognizes the important role female officers, investigators, and forensic professionals play in serving their communities. She often speaks about the need for women in these professions, particularly because many victims of crime are women who may feel more comfortable speaking with and receiving support from female professionals. By increasing representation, visibility, and access to successful female professionals who can serve as mentors and role models, Kelly has inspired countless women to pursue careers where their voices, perspectives, and contributions are greatly needed.”
Gabriela De La Cruz, Cypress College
"Gaby has made a profound impact on me both personally and professionally. Every day, she leads with encouragement, compassion, and a genuine belief in the potential of those around her. She consistently empowers and uplifts her team, creating an environment where people feel supported, valued, and capable of achieving more than they thought possible.
Because of her leadership and example, I made the decision to re-enroll in school to complete my bachelor's degree and pursue a master's degree in education and counseling. She helped me see that continued learning can open doors not only for personal growth but also for the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”
Bridget Kominek, Fullerton College
“Bridget leads by example. She is unapologetically a mother and embraces that identity while serving as an effective and respected leader. She sets an example for women across the District that we do not have to sacrifice a part of who we are to achieve our goals. She actively encourages her female colleagues to pursue leadership opportunities, making herself available to answer questions, provide mentorship, and offer guidance as they navigate their professional paths.
Bridget works hard to model a style of leadership that is both effective and authentic, demonstrating that women can openly challenge power, advocate for equity, and lead with confidence and integrity. Through her actions, mentorship, and advocacy, she creates a more inclusive and supportive environment where women are empowered to grow, lead, and succeed.”
Congratulations to the 2026 Resilience Award winners!
