The California Community Colleges Board of Governors honored NOCCCD with a 2019 Excellence in Energy and Sustainability Award at its January 14, 2020 meeting in Sacramento. NOCCCD was one of 12 California community colleges and college districts to receive this recognition for its work on environmentally sensitive projects.
NOCCCD was awarded as "Best Overall District (Large)" for its Proposition 39 project Chilled Water Thermal Energy Storage at Cypress College. The innovative, 10,000 ton-hour thermal energy storage system is connected to a chilled water campus loop, which reduces electricity demand. This $7.82-million project included more than $1.7 million of Proposition 39 funds and will save Cypress College $162,000 in annual energy costs by cutting 448,000 kilowatt-hours.
"With 115 colleges across the state, the California Community Colleges have a responsibility to meet the state's climate change goals," said Board of Governors President Tom Epstein. "The Board is pleased to recognize this year's winners for setting the standard in taking action to protect our environment while saving taxpayer dollars."
The Board of Governors Energy and Sustainability Awards were established in 2012 to recognize leadership in implementing goals set forth in Proposition 39, also known as the California Clean Energy Jobs Act, to improve energy efficiency and expand clean energy generation in schools.
