January Strategic Planning Update

Major start-up work on the process of developing a new Strategic Plan for the North Orange County Community College District began in January.

A small Steering Committee – composed of Board of Trustee representatives, the Chancellor, District staff, and two planning consultants – is coordinating the effort that will involve the District Planning Council and input from students, staff members, and the community.

During a January 23 meeting, members of the District Planning Council were presented an overview of the planning process that included a timeline and roles and responsibilities of participants.  Types of qualitative and quantitative data to be collected in the process also were discussed at this meeting, with follow-up interview assignments made to Council members.

At a workshop before its regular meeting on January 24, the Board of Trustees heard a similar overview presentation and discussed the process of developing a vision, mission, and values to guide the Strategic Plan.  Board members were asked to develop individual statements to be considered during future discussion and completion of a collective vision, mission, and values.

The next set of meetings for the Steering Committee, District Planning Council, and Board of Trustees is planned for February 13 and 14.

On March 15, the Steering Committee and District Planning Council will participate in an all-day meeting to review the vision, mission, and values established by the Board and begin formulating focus areas that lead to plan goals and strategies.  Then, on March 28, a Strategic Conversation will be hosted by the Board of Trustees and District, with special assistance from this year’s coordinating campus of the annual event, Cypress College.  Input from constituents at the Strategic Conversation will help to refine the Strategic Plan goals and strategies.

After more meetings in April and fine-tuning in May, a proposed Strategic Plan will be presented to the Board of Trustees at its June regular meetings.
